Life was comfortable. We each ran our own consultancy, were active in church and cell group, and our younger daughter was still in university.
Becoming a full-time caregiver was never something I planned for. This role was thrust upon me suddenly, demanding physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual strength. The first month was overwhelming—he was admitted, isolated, and treated immediately for aggressive leukemia.
I was in shock, running around like a headless chicken, juggling medical decisions while trying to settle my husband’s work.
The weight of caregiving was immense. I had to keep his spirits up while hiding my own emotional roller coaster—my fears, doubts, and exhaustion. I coped as best I could, leaning heavily on the Holy Spirit, who gave me words to comfort him even when my heart felt numb.
The psychological toll of isolation was real. Time seemed to stand still while the world moved on. “Be strong and courageous” (Joshua 1:9) became my anchor of hope. Through it all, God was my strength, my comfort, and my counsellor.
Without God, I could not have survived those three to four years of caregiving. Experiencing His presence, empowerment, and comfort on such a deep level is a gift I treasure. This faith, forged in suffering, continues to help me remain steadfast in the trials ahead.
This caregiving journey has deepened my faith and intimacy with God. I have experienced His goodness, mercy, and love in profound ways. John 14:27 now holds new meaning for me: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” This peace—beyond understanding—gives me courage and strength for every challenge.
