27 November 2019 was the day my world collapsed. Less than 48 hours after feeling a lump in my right breast, I received a death sentence. I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer which had already metastasised to my lymph nodes, liver and spine. I literally collapsed twice at the breast doctor’s when I received the news.
My life had been smooth-sailing. Doting parents, stable career, mother to 2 wonderful young adults and wife to a loving husband. Though I accepted Jesus in 2013, I was drifting further and further from Him due to work and family commitments and was even unchurched. My fleshly life then had no room for God.
With the devastating news of advanced cancer, I went into depression with bouts of panic attacks. I loved my life too much; I was not ready to die. Though I did not understand why I had been stricken with advanced cancer, the fear and hopelessness that paralysed me also brought me back to God. The more broken I was, the more I came to rely on Him. I turned back to Him, seeking forgiveness and repentance. I learnt to trust and depend on Him. The more I clung to Him, the more peace I experienced. He was there with me during every treatment and in every moment of despair and anguish. He was pruning me to grow me into a fruitful child for His kingdom.
And every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. John 15:2b
God has blessed me with a loving family, wonderful friends and caring pastors who showered care and love on me, prayed for me and took care of me throughout the cancer journey. He gave me a warm church which emphasises sharing Christ’s love through both word and deed. Within a month after my diagnosis, my husband accepted Jesus after being convicted by His love for us as shown through other Christians, the body of Christ. My daughter and I got baptised soon after. I also came to know Restorative Hearts Ministry and participated in its support group and programmes. In the process, I have made many steadfast and helpful friends who are fellow cancer warriors and conquerors.
I went for 6 cycles of chemotherapy immediately upon diagnosis. God gave me a caring doctor who dispensed the right treatment and our Jehovah Rapha enabled my body to respond well to the chemotherapy and targeted treatments. After the third round of chemotherapy, I was in metabolic remission and all the tumours were gone. He has healed me through blessing the treatments, answering all the prayers of friends and loved ones, and hearing my fervent cries for mercy and healing. He has continued to keep me in remission ever since the last chemotherapy session in March 2020. Till this day, I am still undergoing targeted therapy for maintenance.
Though the pruning process was a very painful one, He has drawn me, the prodigal daughter, back to Him. The stronger I was in the flesh, the weaker I was in the spirit. He has taught me and transformed me to relinquish everything to Him, rely on Him, and rest in Him. I am more at peace now as I know who holds my tomorrow. He has brought my family closer together and closer to Him. I hope more will come to know Him and His great love and faithfulness, and experience this love, joy and peace from Him.
